In Summer term 1 our topic is plants. We will be learning to identify different types of plants and looking at those in our immediate environment. We will look at what plants need to grow and begin to label key parts of plants. We will be growing our own sunflowers and keeping sunflower diaries.
In Summer term 2 our topic will be Animals. We will look at what is living and not living. During this term we will take a trip to Yorkshire Wildlife Park to learn more about wild animals. The children will learn about herbivores and carnivores and begin to recognise animals and their young.
In literacy we will begin the term by looking at fantasy stories. We will explore different fantasy settings and the characters we find in fantasy stories. During our Fantasy Fancy Dress day the children will create and act out their own fantasy stories.
Our first poetry topic this term will be humorous poems and we will focus on the poem: 'Where teachers keep their pets'. The children will then write their own poems about teachers at school!!
In our non-fiction unit we will be learning to write letters. The children will learn key features of a letter and practise writing their own letters.
We will then look at features of a recount and begin to write our weekend news each Monday.
In maths we will be learning to: place value; fractions; name and describe 3D shapes; use money for addition and subtraction; use time words; read analogue and digital clocks; add and subtract numbers using number facts; multiple and divide numbers.
Spring Term 2
This term our topic is flight. We will look at the history of flight and how it has developed over the years. We will experiment making our own paper planes to see which models fly the best and we will look at how planes fly. During this topic we will look at things that can and cannot fly, and we will learn about penguins as flightless birds.
In literacy we will begin the term by looking at stories with a repeated pattern from other cultures. We will be doing lots of speaking and listening in order to retell familiar stories. We will also research other cultures and compare them to our own.
In our non-fiction unit we will be learning about penguins in order to write our own non-fiction text. First we will explore the difference between fiction and non-fiction, so that we can make sure that we use the correct sources for our research.
In maths we will be learning to: sequence numbers and recognise pattern; understand the place value of numbers; measure lengths and to find the difference; measure capacity; use addition and subtraction with money.
We will finish this term with 'Take One Picture' week.
Spring Term 1
This term our topic is weather. We will be learning to identify different types of weather and learning about how they affect us. We will look at the water cycle and learn how rain is formed. We will also be going cloud busting and learning about the different types of clouds that can form in the sky.
In literacy we will begin the term by looking at traditional tales. We will be doing lots of speaking and listening in order to retell familiar stories. We will then look at creating our own characters and developing an alternative version to a traditional tale.
In our non-fiction unit we will be learning about instructions. We will learn to listen to and follow oral instructions, as well as give oral instructions. We will then begin to write our own instructions, using time connectives and bossy words.
Our poetry unit will link to our weather topic. We will listen to and begin to write poems based on the weather.
In maths we will be learning to: know number bonds to 10; recognise odd and even numbers; recognise coins and calculating change; tell the time to half past; addition and subtraction; place value; measure capacity and weight; handling data.
Autumn Term 2
Our topic this term is 'To infinity and beyond'. This term we will be exploring light and dark, looking at sources of light and how shadows can be formed.
We will also be looking at our Earth and our Solar System. We will learn about the planets, the sun and our moon.
In literacy we will begin by looking at stories with a repeated phrase. The children will learn to develop their speaking and listening skills through story telling and drama. We will also learn to write additional parts to a familiar story, looking at adding different punctuation and adjectives.
We will then move onto our non-fiction module where we will be learning about the great fire of London. Children will learn to be detectives and explore what happened back in 1666. This work will also link into our light and dark topic.
At the end of the term we will look at poems with patterns and rhyme. Children will learn to identify rhyme. Children will take part in skipping, chanting poems and compose their own verse of poems that include repetition. We will also perform our own poems using expression and actions.
In maths we will be looking at patterns and sequences in numbers, learning to count in 2s, 5s and 10s. We will also be looking at halving shapes before looking at doubling and halving numbers. This term we will also continue our work on time as well as addition and subtraction.
Autumn Term 1
This term our topic is 'Marvellous Me'. In science we will be looking at the different senses: focusing on what they are, how our body parts work and what can be done to help those with an impaired sense.
in literacy we will begin by looking at stories from a familiar setting, focusing on the stories 'Little Penguin Lost' and 'Not Now Bernard'. We will then be looking at lists captions and labels, where we will use 'Toy Story' for visual literacy and then look at the story 'Billy's Bucket'. Finally we will be looking at poetry.
In maths we will begin by looking at what we mean by a number and practise our counting skills. We will look at simple addition and how to record our work. We will then look at money and time.
