Week 2 (11.01.2021)

Week Beginning 11th January 2021

Core daily activities are listed below. These mirror what we will be teaching in school each day. If your child does some days in school, you only need to do the activities for the days they are at home please.

At the bottom of the page you will also find additional activities you may wish to do with your child over the week - these are not core activities but suggested activities.

Monday 11th January

Phonics - please access todays phonics activities through tapestry where possible.

Group 1

Revisit: Recap all the Phase 2 sounds from their sound mat. Can they read these high frequency words by sight: is, it, in, at

Teach: Tricky words are words which we canot sound out and blend together. We will learn to read them by sight. Teach the words: the, to

Practise: train your brain by quickly flashcarding the words in a random order. How many can you recognise correctly in a minute?

Apply: Yes/No game. Child to read the question and then decide if they answer is yes or no. Is a dog pink? Can a cat jump? Is the sun hot?

Group 2

Revisit: Recap all the single letter sounds of Phase 2 and Phase 3 (up to z). Can they find a given sound on their sound mat?

Teach: Introduce the digraph /qu/. A digraph is where two graphemes (letters) come together to make one phoneme (sound). Two letters - one sound! Together the qu say 'qu'.

Practise: Buried treasure. Using coins/circles write the following words: quick, quiz, quit, quack, quim, quap, squid. Children to then read the words and decide if they are real or fake. Real words can be kept for the treasure chest and fake ones 'binned'.

Maths - Session 2

Talk4Writing - Exploring light and shadows.

How are shadows formed?

Shadows are made by blocking light. Light sources such as the sun give out light rays. If a solid object (opaque) is in the way it stops the light travelling through it and causes it to be dark, hence the shadow.

Today we are going to have a go at making our own shadow puppet of a character from the story. Which character/s from the story would you like to make? Perhaps you could draw a bear and cut it out. If you have lollipop sticks or sticks from outside you could attach them to this. Use a torch to create a shadow of your puppet.

You might even like to make your own puppet theater from a cardboard box. Could you retell the story in your theater or perhaps make up your own story.

Wednesday 13th January

Phonics - please access todays phonics activities through tapestry if possible for videos from your teachers.

Group 1

Teach: Teach the new tricky word 'I'

Practise: Tricky word islands - either make your own large scale islands with paper or use the flashcards and a small world figure for mini islands. Use the words: the, to, no, I. Adult says the word and the child jump onto the 'island' with that word.

Apply: Children write the sentence 'I am ...' and complete with their name.

Go on a sound hunt around your house - what sounds can you hear in each of the rooms? What sounds can you hear outside? Which are the same? Which are different? Are the sounds you hear different in the day time to those at night time?

Maths - Session 4

Talk4Writing - Adapting the story

Today we are going to adapt the story by adding in an additional setting for Daddy Bear to try and sleep in.

Pick one of the rooms/areas of your house from your sound hunt yesterday. What sounds will Daddy Bear hear in your new setting? Add this into your story map.

For example – …. So Mr Bear went to sleep in the cupboard under the stairs. Clink clink went the keys. “Oh no” said Mr Bear “I can’t stand this!” and so he went to sleep in his car…

Friday 15th January

Phonics - please access todays phonics activities through tapestry

Maths - Session 5

https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/early-years/alive-in-5-week-2/

Talk4Writing - What was Mr Bear's problem in the story? Think about why sleep is important for us? Why do we need sleep? Then think of ways in which we can make sure we get a good nights sleep - maybe you could make a list of the things that help you go to sleep.

As a Friday treat maybe you could make a cosy space somewhere in your house, perhaps with a blanket, pillows, a hot chocolate and a favourite book!
